Retail Warehouse Manager

“The implementation of a 24-hour delivery service shows what can be achieved through teamwork.”

“I work at the Gravelly Park Regional Distribution Centre. As the ‘mother depot’, we’re responsible for meeting requirements for slower moving lines to ensure the network meets its customer service targets. Basically, it’s all about providing the customer with what he wants, when he wants, so our job is to have the right stock available and pick the right products ready for distribution.

“I’m in around 7.30am to get feedback from my team after the night shift and attend a management review meeting. This meeting normally dictates how my day pans out; I often have to re-adjust my plans to make sure all daily tasks are covered or deal with changing priorities. The implementation of a 24-hour delivery service was my first major project when I joined, and shows what can be achieved through teamwork. Obviously I can’t be there all the time, so I rely on my management team and, of course, our Operatives. Gravelly Park is a complicated operation and their commitment to getting the job done is exceptional.

“I’ve started a management coaching course to give me a better insight into managing my team and myself. There are constant cost issues, too, and we’re always looking to improve our ways of working without compromising service. It can be pressurised so a good sense of humour is essential. You have to enjoy your work and sometimes be able to laugh at yourself.”
